To tie in with British science week that has the theme of exploration and discovery we held a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) week at Friars during the week of March 12th. It was a great success. Throughout the week children found out about scientists (including the great and sadly departed Stephen Hawking) and mathematicians, they had great fun working with the happy puzzle company on maths challenges and they did lots of different science experiments. On Thursday 15th March all the classes split up and worked on an engineering challenge together which was to design and make a bridge that could support the weight of a bag of sugar using only newspaper and masking tape! Lots of great cooperative learning ensued and we have spotted a number of children who will clearly make great scientists, engineers and mathematicians.
