Personal Social and Health Education
The programme of personal, social and health education is set out in our policy, and includes sex and relationship education, taught with the approval of the Governing Body. Our Sex and relationship policy which can be viewed here explains in detail our approach to teaching this subject.
We use the scheme of the local Standing Advisory Councils for Religious Education (SACRE). The majority of schools in Southwark use this scheme. Parents have statutory right to withdraw children from RE and those who wish to do this should consult the Head Teacher to discuss alternative arrangements. However, we hope that the unbiased and informative nature of the work and the balance of study of all religions will make it unnecessary for parents to exercise this right.
Children in Years 2-5 have swimming lessons as part of the National Curriculum programme of study for physical education. We use a qualified instructor at the Elephant and Castle pool.
Philosophy for Children (P4C)
All of our staff have had basic philosophy for children training and it has been taught across the school in blocked units. P4C consists of presenting children with a stimulus which might be a picture, a poem, a story, an event etc and then the children engage in what is known as “Socratic dialogue” to deepen their understanding of the stimulus but ultimately of themselves and the world around them.
Sex and Relationship Education (SRE)
We teach SRE as part of an integrated health week in the second half of the summer term from Y2 to Y6. Please click on the link to see our Governor approved policy (SRE October 2014)
